Maricopa Community Colleges would like to recognize the 75 employees and students who assisted Maricopa Learns Through Service (MLTS) and Valley of the Sun United Way who hosted the annual Arizona Veterans StandDown Alliance (AVSA) on January 25 - 26, 2018.
Part of the Arizona Housing Coalition, AVSA holds annual events and resource fairs in 12 of Arizona’s 15 counties to help homeless veterans and their families connect with Valley of the Sun United Way for support services.
The mission of AVSA is to help homeless veterans access the resources they need, including housing, to regain their highest level of independence. It also helps community and service providers work collaboratively to positively benefit homeless and at-risk veterans. Ultimately, AVSA events help foster community awareness about the plight of veterans on how best to provide the on-going resources needed to end homelessness.
In 2017, over 1,600 veterans and family members were given legal, financial, and educational help. They also had access to showers, massages, dental care, hot meals, and beds to sleep in if needed.
