Mesa Community College and Adobe Systems Inc. hosted a seminar and workshops showcasing digital rich media projects created by faculty and students. The event, designed to inspire and inform others to integrate digital literacy into their curricula, also highlighted a $25,000 donation made by Adobe to the MCC New Media Lab Experience, which provides access to the Creative Cloud platform supporting digital literacy, creativity, and media competencies.
Chancellor Maria Harper-Marinick spoke of the demand for New Media skills in industries such as journalism, business, marketing, public relations, and video production. MCC and the Maricopa County Community College District, using software contributed by Adobe Systems Inc., are providing opportunities for students to creatively incorporate the use of technology while developing proficiency in professional tools that meet industry standards and increase students’ workforce marketability.
MCC residential faculty Eddie Webb, director/instructor for the NMLE, shared Adobe Cloud project “Water,” produced by MCC’s NMLE students, and “Fear,” produced by Glendale Community College student Ryan Yung. Webb also led a workshop on using Creative Cloud and MOV file.
Keynote Speaker Todd Taylor, distinguished faculty and the director of the First-Year Writing Program at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill, presented on UNC’s successful approach to holistic student success and integration of critical digital literacy skills across the curriculum. He demonstrated how the "learning curve" can be flattened with a new generation of powerful digital literacy tools, such as Adobe Creative Cloud, so that instructors and students alike can spend more time on teaching and learning their courses and less time on the software. The presentation showcased free, online support materials, including the new e-textbook: Adobe Creative Cloud Across the Curriculum: A Guide for Students and Teachers, as well as assignment modules and sample student work in Adobe. Participants left the workshop with a customized digital assignment prompt designed to maximize the use of powerful digital literacy tools while minimizing time spent.
